A recent article by Greg Lowell in the Redstone Review highlights the continuous carnage on our local highways. Deer seem to take the brunt of it but every time the elk herd crosses Highway 36 between Lyons and Nelson Road, they run a deadly gauntlet reminiscent of going over the top on the western front in WW1. The drivers would be those manning the guns in the trenches—also not invulnerable. Would it not be wonderful if our trenching skills were turned into underpasses for the poor creatures and the barbed wire became channeling fences?
